Article: GMC Corvette Set 2019 Trip to the Gilmore Car Museum

July 23, 2019

On July 19, 2019, fourteen members of the GMC Corvette Set Corvette Club and their spouses traveled to Kalamazoo, MI for a weekend of fun. Friday and Saturday were packed with events for the members with most members heading for home on Sunday.

The trip started on Friday with a tour of the Gilmore Car Museum in Hickory Corners. There were many steps recorded on our Fitbits as we viewed the many buildings packed with fantastic cars and automobile memorabilia. Dinner that night was at Erbelli's Gourmet Pizzeria, Italian Bistro & Pub in Kalamazoo which is rated the #5 Eatery in Kalamazoo. The food and service lived up to their reputation.

Saturday's events started with a trip to the Kalamazoo Air Zoo which is an air & space museum that is affiliated with the Smithsonian. About 2 1/2 hours were spent touring the museum and we could have easily spent more time to see and appreciate it all. As we checked in, we met the Windy City Corvette Club that was there from Chicago.

Lunch on Saturday was at a very busy Bell's Eccentric Cafe followed by a tour of the Bells production brewery in Comstock where all the Bell's Oberon and Two-Hearted beer is brewed. We were able to sample some of their beverages while Chris filled us with information about how the brewery started, how much beer is made there (500,000 barrels/year), and how beer is made. This was a very interesting and, for some, refreshing tour.

Saturday ended with dinner at Old Burdick's Bar & Grill in downtown Kalamazoo. Our group managed to keep the wait staff on their toes during a fun-filled dinner.

The Gilmore Museum had scheduled an "All Corvette Car Show and Swap Meet" for Sunday that some of our members had planned to visit. However, the rain that morning convinced most that it was best to head for home. This would have been a great ending to a great trip.
