Mustang created its own class of cars when it launched for the first time in 1965, called the pony car. It inspired other automakers, and soon the marketplace flooded with these 2+2 coupes. Consequently, the muscle car rivalry was still raging, and the Mustang joined this war with higher-performance models. Today, the Mustang boasts an array of engine options, from the punchy turbocharged four-cylinders to the monstrous supercharged V8s. It also gained handling chops with the new four-wheel independent suspension giving other nimble sports cars a run for their money.

Currently the best-selling sports car in America, Ford unveiled the seventh chapter of the iconic Mustang at the Detroit Auto Show on 14th September. Set to arrive in the summer of 2023, it features a revised-but-familiar chassis, styling, new interior, and improved powertrains. The new-generation Mustang continues with the previous generation's 5.0-liter V8 engine, only this time producing 480 hp. The 315 hp 2.3-liter turbo EcoBoost engine is also available for selection. The engines come with either a six-speed manual or a 10-speed automatic transmission. Ford also announced an all-new Mustang Dark Horse model for 2024 powered by a 500-hp Coyote V8 engine.

It's no doubt the 2024 Mustang is the car to beat. Luckily, there's a wide range of high-performance sports cars out there that perform as well – if not better – than the eponymous pony car. Here are 10 proper sports cars to consider instead of the new Ford Mustang.
